What is architecture? Architecture is the art and science of building, the word being derived from Latin ‘architectura’ and Greek ‘arkitekton’ (master builder).

What does an architect do? An architect is primaily the lead player in any building projects. As a trained professional, he is entrusted with transforming the client’s needs for space into reality.

Traditionally, an architect is involved in all aspects related to the design, construction and commissioning of a building project. Specifically, an architect:

.::Plans the overall project

.::Designs/plans the township

.::Designs the building

.::Designs the landscaping

.::Designs the interiors of buildings

.::Leads and co-ordinates the input of other parties in the building team

.::Liaises with the local authorities to obtain building approvals

.::Supervises the constructions of buildings

With increasing complexities of modern day projects, architects take on many more responsibilities among others:

.::Feasibility studies and implementation strategies

.::Socio-economic studies and land-use planning

.::Urban renewal and design

.::Project Management

.::Building technology and systems

The trend today is for architects to specialize in certain areas of building industry. Another option is for architects to use their skills in related industries such as manufacturing, financing, smart buildings etc.

Some believe that a basic training in architecture is good grounding for leaping successfully into the competitive 21st century.

What are the prospects as an architect? Architects work both in the public sector and private sector. In the public arena, architects are employed in the various department (e.g. JKR, the various Dewan Bandaraya.etc) as well as the local council throughout the nation.

In the private sector an architect may be employed in an architectural firm. After gaining suitable experience and business acumen, he may decide to set up his own private practice. The services of architects are also in demand by contractors, building products manufacturers and suppliers.

Those who like to be academicians can become faculty members in the various universities as well as colleges offering architecture courses.

Architects can even work as journalist or critics - highly respected options in many developed nations.
